Beach Boy with Red Ball Watercolor Painting

https://www.etsy.com/listing/195080291/boy-child-and-red-ball-art-print?

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY! Here's my modern little Yankee Doodle Dandy to help celebrate the holiday! As soon as I saw him on the beach, I knew that he'd be the perfect subject for my Independence Day tribute! "Freedom" is what my newest painting is all about!

You may be surprised to see that this time I didn't paint the sand and sea. I felt that with the shadows, the painting said everything that I wanted to express - childhood, freedom, joy, motion.

What does this watercolor painting say to you?

Beach Boy with Red Shovel Painting

https://www.etsy.com/listing/189880125/beach-boy-child-red-shovel-seashore?

A perfect day for the beach, so grab your shovel and head to the surf! I just love seeing children on the beach and this little fellah is no exception.

When I created this watercolor painting, I wanted to capture the wonderful reflections and shadows in the watery sand, the foamy surf, and a beautiful sun-filled sky.

Do you remember when you were a child and strutted unafraid toward the ocean? Do you recollect the thrill of a beach adventure? Do you recall the unique feelings of joy you felt there? I do and still relive them every time I walk the beach!

White Hibiscus Flower Watercolor Painting

© 2013 Barbara Rosenzweig, Watercolor Painting
11x14 matted to 16x20 $52
8x10 matted to 11x14 $37
sold matted for standard size frames

I had so much fun making the many shadows on my "Yellow Hibiscus" watercolor painting (http://barbararosenzweig.blogspot.com/2013/04/yellow-hibiscus-flower-art-print-of.html), that I knew one day I would paint a white hibiscus! That "day" has come (it actually took quite a long time to create this) and you can check out the results for yourself.

As you can see, the brilliant shadows really stand out against the white petals. I love vibrant, rich color! To create this "Mingling" effect, place the first color at one corner of the shadow and, while it is still wet, quickly clean your brush, load with another color, and lightly touch the edge of the brush to the previous color. Then watch the magic begin as the paints blend to form wonderful patterns! Continue this process until the shadow is complete and use this method wherever the mingling works best for the painting.

I became so fascinated with this process and its wonderful results, that I created an entire series of painting using ONLY the Mingling technique. You can see this in my experimental Sports Series. https://www.etsy.com/shop/BarbaraRosenzweig?section_id=11890447

Even if you don't consider yourself an artist, grab a children's watercolor set or get one at the dollar store, and just have fun trying this out!

Grey Horse Portrait Painting Watercolor Art

© 2013 Barbara Rosenzweig, Watercolor Painting
11x14 matted to 16x20 $52

I don't know if you remember a TV show called "Mr. Ed (1961-66)," but I do! I was thinking of it while painting this horse portrait and the thought of it kept bringing a smile to my face, especially as I painted its eyes. I almost felt as though it was coming alive and was ready to speak to me, like it did on TV!
What were your memories of this show?

Beach Girl Friends Seashore Painting

What could be better than girls having fun together at the beach, especially if they are best friends, sisters, twins! Here, they are delightedly looking at the seagulls, toes tickled by the foamy surf!

This watercolor painting turned out to be an accidental commission. When I was at an Art Fair, I spotted absolutely adorable twins. I asked their mother if I could take a photo of her children. I was so brazen about asking because I love to paint kids! She agreed and I told her that I would send her an email of the finished painting. ...and the end of the story is that she loved it, wanted the original, as well as matted fine art prints for other family members!

When I looked at the photo, I decided to set the scene at the powder white sands and emerald waters of a Florida beach. It's so much fun to let your imagination soar and not stick to the reality of a photo!

I started with a sketch of the twins, but moved them apart. Next came the sky and beginnings of the water, surf, hair and skin.

Adding waves, refining clouds, deepening the color of the water, putting in the shadows of the blouses came next.

When I started to paint the skirt stripes, I decided that the original colors in the photo were too close to the colors in the water. I wanted drama and fun! I started with pale purple and a hot pink, but felt that deep purple and bright red would work better. The wave on the back right was really starting to bother me. I think that I mostly paint from my gut, not my head. But I just couldn't let go of the fact that I hated that wave, even if I could balance it with others on the left side of the painting. I tried to stop thinking about that wave by adding the three seagulls that the girls were looking at.

'Couldn't stand it anymore. Out went that wave! I felt much better and then worked on making the emerald waters darker at the horizon to give it depth, refining the hair and skin color, correcting the left leg of the right girl, adding the purple hair clip, deepening the colors of the stripes, darkening the shadows of the clothing, and creating the children's reflections. Done!

I spent so much time on this painting, that I have come to love those little girls. As you might have guessed, I have no grandchildren yet! I had a hard time parting with it, but knew that the family would cherish it. I do have 15 fine art prints that I've made and one will be framed for my home!

I hope that you've enjoyed "listening in" on the decisions I made during my creative process. I'd love to hear from you!!

Yellow Hibiscus Flower Art Print of Original Watercolor Painting

This tropical flower is absolutely stunning! I love painting all of the wonderful crinkles, textures, neat structures, and shadows of this hibiscus!

For this painting I used the technique called "mingling." To paint the shadows, I used one color after the other, but rinsed the brush before using the next color. This way, I let the new color just touch the preceding one, allowing the color to mingle in lovely and unexpected ways. That's part of the fun of watercolors!

Check out this unique technique for painting the shadows and tell me what you think!

Egret Beach Bird Painting

Great White Egret

What a majestic, elegant bird this Great White Egret is! This huge shore bird is a dazzling sight with its magnificent white feathers and large wingspan. I love watching it hunt. The Great White Egret stands immobile or slowly wades through the wetlands waiting for the perfect moment. Suddenly, it strikes with its yellow bill a deadly jab impaling a fish.

This art print of my original watercolor painting is perfect for your seashore home décor or as a wonderful gift for the nature lover in your life!

Beach Boy Walking - Watercolor Painting

Even in chilly weather, walking on the beach is an adventure! This little boy is striking out on his own looking for whatever treasures wash up on the shore. I just couldn't resist capturing this moment! I loved painting the waves with the dancing foam on the water and his reflection on the wet sand.

Enjoy this fine art reporduction of my original watercolor painting in your child's room or added to your vacation home decor.

Feathers blowing in the wind, salmon-colored legs and beak reflecting in the shallow surf, and eyes searching for the next meal in the blazing Florida sun make this painting spectacular! NEW PAINTING "Garden Tools with Sun Hat"

I love the creative process of gardening. Both my mother and grandmother were gardeners who inspired me. The tools in this painting are theirs and I love the beauty of the rust. This art print of my original watercolor would make a marvelous addition to your sun room or the perfect gift for the gardener in your life!

I thought that you would like to see how I create my watercolor paintings. After starting with a photograph of the still life on my kitchen table that captures the light at that moment, I begin to paint. The green ribbon on my hat blended too much with the greens in the background, so I changed it to red. Decision time begins when I have to plan what type of surface I want my leather gardening glove, rusty gardening tools, and straw sun hat to rest on. At first, I have to admit that I was timid. I wanted it to be a wooden bench, but was not real adventuresome about the colors of the wood. Finally, as you can see in the finished painting at the top, I threw away all inhibitions!

Not quite done. Check the top finished photo to see the refinements.

I'd love to hear your reactions to my latest watercolor painting!

WHITE WATER LILY - New Watercolor Painting

When I think of fabulous flowers, the water lily instantly comes to mind! I've taken hundreds of photos of them over the years, but this is the first time that I have attempted to paint one. I guess that before this time I felt that I needed more experience to try it.

There are a lot of challenges here. Besides figuring out how to paint essentially white petals, giving them a sense of depth and interest, I had to understand how to paint a reflection in water. Even though I liked how the reflection petals looked in the middle painting, there was no sense of movement in the water. To give this sensation, I pulled the color from the water across the flower reflection. Also, I wanted to "push back" the lily pad behind the flower and make the blossom "pop." To create this effect, I darkened and added blues and browns for interest and depth. I hope that I achieved these goals in the final painting.

Below are a few of the stages in the creation of this painting.

Revision - LITTLE BOY BLUE IN THE CORNFIELD WATERCOLOR

I don't usually do this, but I've "updated" my Little Boy Blue in the Cornfield painting. I've been looking at it for a number of months and a few things just kept bothering me. I decided to rework his left arm, making is fall more to his side, darken the shadows on the back of his clothing, shoes and arms, and give the cornstalks a bit more interest for a hint of depth. It also bothered me that the string from his hat went under his lip and not his chin. This was because the little boy I "captured" kept putting it there, so that's how I initially painted it. I was able to move it to where I felt it belonged. He can't change it now!

Do you think that any of these changes improved this painting?

New Watercolor Painting - TENNIS MAN

This Tennis Player watercolor painting is part of my new series of uniquely colorful prints of Men at Work and Play. Each one that I created came with its own challenges.

In the bottom painting, you can see that I was almost finished when I realized that it just didn't have the "punch" of the others. There was too much white, too much outlining. I had to do something that gave more weight to the figure, more force in his swing.

I decided to take some photos of my husband, in the same position as the tennis player in my painting. It was fun (not for him) watching him try to balance without falling backwards! I did this to see where to put the folds in his shirt and shorts. Here's the final painting.

Almost Finished

OK, what do you think? Should I continue the series and maybe do another series with women? I'd love to hear your ideas!

New Watercolor Painting - EXOTIC ALLAMANDA FLOWER

Here's my new painting, the exotic, tropical Allamanda Jamaican Sunset. This wonderful exotic flower grows in Australia, Florida, and the tropics. Known as Yellow Bell, Golden Trumpet or Buttercup, it belongs to the dogbane family. No matter what name it has, I loved painting it! This makes a great gift or is wonderful for you to enjoy in your own home!

New Painting WHITE CALLA LILY WATERCOLOR

This stunning white calla lily "called to me" at my local produce center. Its fabulous creamy color, great shape, and unusual texture was hard to resist. I had a great time painting it with its subtle gradations of white, cream, and yellow. Adding the tropical leaf helps set off this gorgeous blossom! Enjoy!

BEACHED SAILBOAT

What a majestic sight! Walking along the beach on Florida's Gulf Coast, I spotted this beached catamaran sitting alone, silently, gently tilting with the soft waves. This gem would look wonderful in your home, a reminder of a special vacation or just a peaceful vision.

Simply Gorgeous
"This is a gorgeous collection from the OnFireTeam. Enjoy!," says oneofakindbabydesign from oneofakindbabydesign . I'm so pleased that my Beached Sailboat was included in something called "Gorgeous!"
