This week, I finally found the time to continue working on my bowl of roses watercolor painting.  My inspiration is the rose bush that gives me a continuous bounty of blossoms from spring until late autumn.

I started this time with deepening the shadows of the petals to give more excitment and depth to the flowers. I've also lightened the tips of some petals to show where the light would hit it.

The bowl is even more of a challenge. I'm trying to capture its rustic look, show the light and reflections of the petals, and give a sense of the surface textures.

I'm welcoming all suggestions!

One World One Heart 2011 Blog Event - Welcome Blog Travelers!

One World One Heart Blog Event

What choice do I have? I'm Barbara Rosenzweig and I love gardening, have been doing it for over 40 years (am I giving away my age?), and love each flower's intense colors and textures! I have absolutely no choice but to try to capture their beauty in my watercolors. Travel, too, gives me wonderfully inspiring landscapes to paint, here in Pennsylvania, USA, where I live, throughout our country, and the world.

I'm a mom to two grown daughters and a wife to a man who puts up with all of the time I devote to painting.  Throughout my adult life, whether the dishes were piled high in the sink or papers needed to be graded (did I mention that I was a biology teacher for 36 years), I took time out to indulge my creative streak.

In the winter, with snow storms making frequent visits, I have perpetual sunshine in my studio (my younger daughter's former bedroom!).The reason - each spring, summer, and fall I take photos of my beauties to paint all winter long. What a wonderful way to spend a lifetime!

For this awesome blog event, I have 2 gifts, each representing a passion of mine - painting and photography.

# 1: A matted Limited Edition print of my Watercolor Painting "Red Tree Peony" 8x10:

#2: My Original Photograph "Sunset on the Beach" 8x10.

All you have to do is post here to say "Hello," tell me where you come from, and what gift you want. Be sure to leave your current email address with your comment, so that I can contact the winners.

Everyone from all over the world is welcome!

You have until February 17th to comment. Maybe you will be the one to win the gift you choose in your comment - picked by a number generator.
The Winners will be announced and I will email them, as well as post it

Good Luck!
...and thanks for visiting.
Hope to see you again soon!.

Philadelphia Artists Are Featured

"Birch Trees in Winter"
Original Landscape Watercolor Painting
By Artist Barbara Rosenzweig
11 x 14 - $245 + shipping

Artist Amy Kontir says, "Yes, we survived Snowmageddon and still look out upon the foot of white frosting our formerly green lawns. So, yes, it's cold and white and nippy and will last six more weeks... BUT we will not resent it while we stomp through it. We will enjoy it, embrace it, breathing in the chill and exhaling with a smile. Cheers, Mr. Freezemeister!" Be sure to check out my original watercolor, "Birch Trees in Winter."

Seed Starting Timetables

John Scheepers Kitchen Garden Seeds
Seed-Starting Timetables
As the cold winds blow and the snow flies (again), it is the perfect time to plan your spring and summer gardens with the Kitchen Garden Seeds catalog. Make a wish list of the vegetables and herbs that you would like to grow. Think about what you want to harvest for delicious, sultry terrace dinners with family and friends, and bracing feasts to put away for hearty nourishment on cold winter nights like these.
While you have the time, pull out your favorite seasonally-inspired cookbooks, brainstorm new menus and decide what you can grow in your own garden for this season’s culinary repertoire. Don’t forget your floral wish list for abundant display gardens and lush, ever-full cutting beds, or the seeds you will need for culinary hostess and holiday gifts, and special crafty gifts (like gourd birdhouses). Ask your children what they would like to grow in their own little patch~pumpkins, sunflowers, purple carrots, yellow cherry tomatoes or a morning glory-covered tee-pee?
From a practical perspective, consider making a two-part order. The first, most timely part, includes the varieties that must be started indoors for transplant into the garden later. The second part would be the list of varieties to be direct sown into the garden once the threat of spring frost has passed.
Here is the general seed-starting schedule. It is based on the standard rule of thumb (for seeds that need to be started indoors) to start seeds eight weeks before the last expected spring frost date.
Eight-week General Seed-Starting Timetable
Horticultural Zones 9 & 10:  Start seeds indoors now.
Horticultural Zone 8:  Start seeds indoors in early February.
Horticultural Zone 7:  Start seeds indoors in mid February.
Horticultural Zone 6: Start seeds indoors in late February.
Horticultural Zone 5: Start seeds indoors in early March.
Horticultural Zones 1-4: Start seeds indoors in mid to late March.
There are vegetables, herbs and flowers that require more or less time than the standard eight weeks. Here are the seed starting schedules for them:
Vegetable/Herb Seed-Starting Timetable
Nine Weeks: Broccoli, Cabbage and Kohlrabi (transplant out four weeks before the last frost date).
Ten Weeks: Celery, Celeriac, Jicama and Lemongrass.
Eleven Weeks: Leeks, Artichokes and Cauliflower (transplant out four weeks before the last frost date).
Twelve Weeks: Cardoons and Brussels Sprouts.
Sixteen Weeks: Strawberries (for first year crop) and Rosemary.
Flower Seed-Starting Timetable
Five Weeks: Alyssum.
Ten Weeks: Dianthus, Digitalis, Lobelia and Heliotrope .
Twelve Weeks: Datura, Salvia and Viola.
