Bucks County Designer House & Gardens

Old Glory Farm, an 18^th century fieldstone manor home in Doylestown, was open from May 1 to May 29.  Its modern updates are well integrated in this historic home. The gardens were expansive and beautiful, while decorators did a wonderfully creative job to each of the rooms of the house. (No photographs were permitted inside the home.)

This is a fund-raiser run by the Village Improvement Association of Doylestown to support Doylestown Hospital and V.I.A. Community Projects. For information for next year’s tour, visit www.buckscountydesignerhouse.org.

Curator from L'Alchemie is the creator of this wonderful collection with such a creative theme. She included my painting "Beach Chair with Sarong."  One person commented, "Can I please spend the day in that chair?" I'm ready for it, too!

WHAT THE ...HELLEBORE!

Never thought that I’d ever say this, but I do love my hellebores! For over 35 years, I didn’t plant these gems because the lovely blossoms faced down instead of up. I know; dumb reason! Then I started seeing newer hybrids that somewhat faced sideways and were varied colors and shapes. Finally, I just couldn’t resist!

If you have a shaded area, do try these since they not only have long-lasting blossoms, but the leaves stay a wonderful glossy green throughout much of the year. Enjoy!

MACRO FRIDAY in MY GARDEN

Love taking pictures of my garden beauties, especially now that my kids are not around here to be photographed! These blossoms are a constant inspiration for my watercolor paintings. Even in the dead of winter, I can be back in the garden when I check out these reference photos while I paint.

I enjoy using silver to capture colorful reflections, especially the vivid reds of strawberries. This amazingly detailed original watercolor painting will look wonderful in any sophisticated dining area.

TROPICAL BROMELIAD

I just listed my "Tropical Bromeliad" on Etsy. I worked hard to create this wonderful exotic plant to show its rich, vivid colors and deep shadows - a real challenge with watercolors! This is a departure for me. I seem to be obsessed with painting flowers, which I love. With this, I could concentrate on the wonderful colors, textures, and shapes of this incredible plant. I hope that you will enjoy it!

GARDEN MAINTENANCE

Garden Maintenance: This month brings many of the same tasks as previous months:

• Weed – get them while they are still relatively small, they will only get bigger and more tenacious.
• Mulch only if you have to. Planting ground covers helps prevent intrusive weeds in bare spots.
• Deadhead to prevent the formation of seeds that will take the energy from the plant’s growth. However, if you want the fruit and seeds for winter interest, keep them on.
• Remove poorly located “volunteers” to better locations or share them, if they are not invasive.
• Sit back and enjoy the results of your labors!

Star gazer lilies with their delicate pink hues, roses and peonies with their alluring vibrancy, apple blossoms with their future fruit cradled by soft white petals. It sounds like a springtime stroll through a lush, bountiful garden. But this floral paradise exists inside, adorning the walls of the Olitsky Art Gallery at Congregation Beth Or in Maple Glen.  These scenes of natural splendor are the watercolor creations of artist Barbara Rosenzweig, whose work has been described as “a breath of spring” by longtime congregant and gallery organizer Norma Jarrett.

Rosenzweig is currently the featured artist at the Beth Or gallery in a month-long show that began on Friday, May 13^th. In addition to Rosenzweig’s signature floral paintings, the exhibit displays her watercolor renderings of winter landscapes, lake and beach scenes, quaint country cottages and even the bustling South Philly Italian Market. The collection of 42 paintings in the Beth Or exhibit also includes some of Rosenzweig’s vivid tablescapes of realistically luscious-looking fruit.

I just finished this painting! These softly colored magnolias are set in a golden background giving it a glow that is luminous. For that golden effect, I used a lemon yellow and blended it into a yellow ochre.
