GARDEN MAINTENANCE

Garden Maintenance: This month brings many of the same tasks as previous months:
  • Weed – get them while they are still relatively small, they will only get bigger and more tenacious.
  • Mulch only if you have to. Planting ground covers helps prevent intrusive weeds in bare spots.
  • Deadhead to prevent the formation of seeds that will take the energy from the plant’s growth. However, if you want the fruit and seeds for winter interest, keep them on.
  • Remove poorly located “volunteers” to better locations or share them, if they are not invasive.
  • Sit back and enjoy the results of your labors!

The blossoms below are from the garden of Barbara Rosenzweig.

  1. Today I followed step one and have the sore back and hands to prove it! The buttercups are so very tough and require a lot of digging to get every last bit of root. Tomorrow I'll transplant and plant. We are having a rainy weekend, so it's a good time to do these chores.

  2. Well I've done the weeding but that's as far as I got! It's beautiful here today though so after Mass I plan to hit my back yard again. My yard is still really squishy but things are finally beginning to dry out. Would love to see more of your garden...I haven't heard from Ruth. Have you?

  5. What is that second flower? I love it! I'm guessing a Siberian iris, but I'm not sure. We're still digging out from tornado damage, so my only planting thus far has been in containers, but I'm dying to get out and dig in the dirt.

  6. Your flowers are beautiful! It was been raining so much here in New York lately that I haven't even had a chance to plant flowers or vegetables as yet...hopefully soon!

I have to admit I am a very reluctant gardener.
I love flowers, but not so much the work involved!

  17. Hi Barbara, great advice. I've started to use solarizing on my garden to control weeds. It's been very effective so far...especially perhaps because we live in Arizona!

Thanks for a fabulous gardening link to Alphabe-Thursday's letter "F".

    A+
