Yellow Hibiscus

 

This tropical flower is absolutely stunning! I love painting all of the wonderful crinkles, textures, neat structures, and shadows of this hibiscus!

 

For this painting I used the technique called "mingling." To paint the shadows, I used one color after the other, but rinsed the brush before using the next color. This way, I let the new color just touch the preceding one, allowing the color to mingle in lovely and unexpected ways. That's part of the fun of watercolors!

I just love watching this fabulous bird! It gracefully glides over the water, dives to catch a fish, then perches contentedly to digest its meal.

 

What a challenge to paint it, too! This time, I wanted to make the plumage realistic, but not show each feather. The light is important, showing the shadows without hiding the details is a bit tricky!

Egret Beach Bird Painting

Great White Egret

 

What a majestic, elegant bird this Great White Egret is! This huge shore bird is a dazzling sight with its magnificent white feathers and large wingspan. I love watching it hunt. The Great White Egret stands immobile or slowly wades through the wetlands waiting for the perfect moment. Suddenly, it strikes with its yellow bill a deadly jab impaling a fish.

White Pelicans Ocean Birds Painting

I can watch these amusing shore birds for hours! Their huge orange bills and beautiful white feathers glisten in the sunlight as they bob up and down on clear, blue shimmering waves. Sometimes, these pelicans form in masses looking like a large flotilla of ships! What a wonderful addition to a bright airy home with a beach theme.

 

For the shadows on this painting, I allowed the different colors I used (brown madder, verditer blue, quinacridone gold,and mineral violet to mingle. This entails using each watercolor paint separately, cleaning the brush between colors, and letting the next color just touch, then mingle with it. It gives a wonderful, not a boring gray tone, effect for the shadows!

What a fabulously colorful frog. Many scientists think that the large red eyes evolved to scare away preditors. When the frog is disturbed, its startle coloration of flashing huge eyes, bright orange feet and blue-and lime green legs, scares preditors giving it time to get away. These non-poisonous frogs eat crickets, flies, and moths with their long, sticky tongues.
