Art Demo Video - Alstroemeria Lily Flower Watercolor Painting

I've finally finished my Alstroemeria Lily Flower Watercolor Painting!

https://www.etsy.com/listing/215776678/pink-alstroemeria-lily-flower-painting?

As you can see from the blog post below, it looks similar, but certainly a lot of "fine tuning" has taken place. One of the main things that I did was deepen the dark pinks of the shadows and put more golds and yellows into the petals. Whenever dark colors are made even darker next to light ones, like on the far right petals, it makes the flower "pop."

I also properly defined the stems below the flowers. Once they were in, I was able to put shadows and a dark background to give depth and drama.

For the background on the left, I used more layers of ultramarine blue and burnt sienna next to the flower to "push" the flower image forward, also creating greater depth. In the video below, you can see that cross-hatching watercolors can create a rich, deep background that makes the subject of the painting POP! I learned many of my techniques from renowned artists, including Ann Abgott.

Alstroemeria Pink Flower Watercolor Painting in Progress

I just can't help myself! I've put it off for as long as I can, but I can no longer delay painting these fabulous flowers!

When I first saw Alstroemeria, I thought that they were "fake" silk flowers. It wasn't until I actually touched them that I realized they were indeed real! I have been buying fresh cut Alstroemeria for quite some time now because not only are they beautiful, but they last weeks!

Here is the beginning of my painting of a bouquet of salmon-pink flowers. After I penciled them in, I started to lay in the colors to get the general shapes and experiment with the background.

After weeks, it's finally starting to look like something. I'm trying to get that luminous quality that these flowers are known for.

I still have a long way to go, but I will keep working at it. It's the tiny details that make all the difference! I hope that you enjoy getting a glimpse at my painting in progress. When I finish, I'll post the completed Alstroemeria!

Pink Lily Watercolor Painting Art

https://www.etsy.com/listing/187190007/pink-lily-flower-painting-art-print-of?

I absolutely love this flower! When I first saw the Alstroemeria, I thought that it was an artificial silk flower. This South American Peruvian Lily, or Lily of the Incas, seems to be available at most markets and lasts up to three weeks. What more could I want from such a stunning cut flower for brightening my kitchen.

After planning for a long time, I decided not to paint the entire bouquet, but focus on one beautiful blossom of the Alstroemeria Lily. Although I favor realism in my art, especially in creating flowers, I prefer to make the backgrounds impressionistic. If you look carefully, you can see hints of buds just starting to open.

I hope that you enjoy this Fine Art Print of my Original Watercolor Painting which will last even longer than the real thing! It will give you many years of pleasure!

WHITE WATER LILY - New Watercolor Painting

When I think of fabulous flowers, the water lily instantly comes to mind! I've taken hundreds of photos of them over the years, but this is the first time that I have attempted to paint one. I guess that before this time I felt that I needed more experience to try it.

There are a lot of challenges here. Besides figuring out how to paint essentially white petals, giving them a sense of depth and interest, I had to understand how to paint a reflection in water. Even though I liked how the reflection petals looked in the middle painting, there was no sense of movement in the water. To give this sensation, I pulled the color from the water across the flower reflection. Also, I wanted to "push back" the lily pad behind the flower and make the blossom "pop." To create this effect, I darkened and added blues and browns for interest and depth. I hope that I achieved these goals in the final painting.

Below are a few of the stages in the creation of this painting.

NEW TECHNOLOGY - Video for the Blog

Sorry to be away for so long! I'm continuing to paint, but also trying to learn how to create videos for this blog and my website. I'd love to feature watercolor tutorials and paintings in progress. Isn't it about time that I came into the modern age!

Here's my first attempt at an introduction to my paintings. Crude beginning, but I have to start somewhere! Just click on the arrow at the bottom left of the video.

Yes, you are right. I do have to replace this soon, filming when the sun is not in my eyes and my hair is styled better!

Suggestions? Please let me know if it "works" on your computer.

NEW PAINTING - PINK TULIP

Tulips say Romance and Elegance. My new painting of a single tulip says both with its antique gold filigree and rich green backdrop.

I hope that you enjoy my gold filigree technique. I used gold gesso, a very thick water-based paint, rolled it out with a brayer, used a special filigree stamp, then stamped it under my watercolor and, for parts, on top of it. Try it. It's fun!

Linking to Pink Saturday.

Spring Around the Rosie, Pockets Full of Pink
Annie Becwar from inkieannie selected a wonderful collection of pink handmade and fine art items! So glad that she included my new Pink Tulip painting. Enjoy!
